What are the causes of hair loss?

The causes of hair loss are numerous and relate to both genetic and environmental factors. Hair loss is a problem that occurs both in men and women and has a major psychological impact as a consequence. Strong healthy hair is one of the most important elements of male and female beauty, hence an increasing number of people with hair loss problems, resort to expert help.

The most common cause of male hair loss is heredity, which in combination with hormonal activity and age, cause androgenetic alopecia. Also a small percentage of women (around 10-15%), presents hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia (female type), which is due to hormonal disorders.

Other medical causes of hair loss are diseases of the scalp such as fungus infection, malfunction of the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism), chronic diseases, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and medications. In these cases, when the causes of hair loss are identified and the patient is treated accordingly, the problem is resolved without further treatment.

One of the main causes of hair loss today, is the modern stressful lifestyle. Strong emotional situations and stress contribute to the problem of hair loss. Also the everyday diet is one of the main causes of hair loss, since the lack of proteins, vitamins and minerals (such as iron), intensify the problem. A proper diet that includes protein and iron elements (poultry, fish, legumes, milk, cheese, liver, whole grains, spinach, lentils) can reverse the causes of hair loss. Other rarer causes of hair loss may be: exposure to dusty and polluted environment , excessive friction in combing and brushing, aggravating hairdressing processes, overexposure to UV rays and frequent contact with sea water and chlorinated water.
